September 11 Learning Stations

Winghaven Schoolhouse will be having an open invitation learning station for homeschoolers reviewing the impact of the 10th anniversary of the September 11th tragedy.

The event will be held on Tuesday, September 13th at 1:00-3:00 pm.

Parents are invited to attend with their children and cycle through a rotation of stations featuring various books and projects related to the events of that day. Light refreshments will be served.

As adults many of us have clear memories of that time a decade ago, but for many of our children it is a vague memory or a history lesson.

Come and spend an afternoon honoring the heroism of our citizens and God's continued sovereignty over all of the events of His world. Share your oral history with your children.

Children will add their handprints to American flag lap quilts to be given as gifts to residents of the Vineland Veterans' Home

Though the event is free of charge, a donation toward material costs will be accepted and pre-registration is required. RSVP to heycrystal@comcast.net for confirmation and directions.

september 11th Titles For Children

My delightful librarian-friend Sylvia was thoughtful enough to compose a list of recommended resources for parents to use when sharing their memories of September 11,2001 with their children. We will be relying heavily on these titles at the September 11th Tenth Anniversary Learning Station event at Winghaven Schoolhouse on September 13th.

First, The Little Chapel That Stood, by A.B. Curtiss. The story of St. Paul's Chapel, built in 1766, which withstood the collapse of the Twin Towers just across the street.

September 12th was written by kids affected directly in NYC and tells how they coped. Sylvia's dad, whose birthday is September 12th, gave copies of this book to her children to have as they learned about that day. So special.
September Roses is another worthy title, written by Jeanette Winter. Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey. Sure to intrigue my boys.

Bravemole by Lynne Jonelle. A little fiction to brighten the spirit.

Three titles which tell the true story of a red-tailed hawk which nested on a sky-scraper's leadge in NYC. Great for perspective on the heights of the buildings in New York. City Hawk by Meghan McCarthy; The Tale of Pale Male by Jeanette Winter: and Pale Male:citizen Hawk of NYC.
